Tropical Rain Forest Mural

I’ve been teaching painting techniques and the love of color to some 3rd grade students. The culmination of our painting lessons is to do this mural. For this mural I bought red, yellow and blue paint and all the colors have been mixed by the kids. It is wonderful to see them working and saying things such as I need my purple to be a little darker or to lighten up the orange. There are still 2 more 3rd grade classes that have to paint on the mural for it to be done. I will keep posting

New look after 25 more kids painted on mural.
The painting part of the mural is done. This is what it looks like now. We made little clay birds last week and will glaze them this week. These birds will go on the mural in a special way. I will keep you posted.

Finished mural with little clay birds.

It’s in the Pulp: Paper making in Santa Cruz

I am grateful to have been included in this exhibit at the Museum of Art and History. It is a beautiful show and the works are amazing. Must not miss this exhibit.

Musical bag

This paper piece was made with about 6 interlocking layers of abaca paper and fabric; then altered with pencil and acrylic lines and finally completed with the bamboo and clay elements in the top part of the piece.
I’m sad to say this piece is not in the Museum exhibit because it is in another country, but there are others of my works and many by renown artist in the paper arts from our community such as Chuck Hilger, John Babcock, Madelaine DeJollie, Karen Lauhban, and many more.

little clay Birds/Pajaritos en Ceramica

This is a process presentation on how to make small clay birds and how to finish them with white terra sigillata.
Terra sigillata is a process by which the application of refined slip is used to get a high satin gloss without a glaze, using simple, time-effective polishing methods. In this video I used a very simple recipe to make the sigillata and the polishing is done with just soft rubbing with plastic.

Horses Horses Horses

These are 36 of the 50 horses that I am making for the Sanchez art center 50/50 exhibit. I’m having a great time letting each image go where it may.
I am using 6″X6″ tiles which I draw with under-glaze pencils and add a splash of color with glaze. After firing the tiles I finish the pieces with encaustic medium and oil paints. I use additive and subtractive methods to achieve a rich, textural surface with a semi-translucent finish that gives the pieces an ephemeral quality.

Enjoy!
Here are at last horses 50 total Yeiiiii!!!!!!!

Horses

This is a presentation of the process I used to create these horse paintings.

The pieces have to be 6″X6″ and the idea is to produce 50 pieces in 50 days.
Thus the title of the exhibit “50/50”
Sanchez Art Center * 1220 Linda Mar Blvd. * Pacifica, California
July 30 to August 29 * Ticketed Preview July 29 7-9 pm * Opening Reception July 30 6-10
I start by making a drawing with an under-glaze pencil, then I use glazes to highlight some areas.
After the tiles come out of the kiln, I paint them with oils and encaustic medium.
I hope you enjoy the process.

This is a link to the wikipedia explanation of encaustic.
